June in Colorado is a beautiful time of year—bright skies, fresh mountain air, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. But for older adults, especially those living in higher-altitude areas like Teller County, it’s also important to stay mindful of summer health risks.
From hydration to heat awareness, here are a few wellness tips to help seniors stay safe, active, and thriving all season long.
1. Hydration is Key—Especially at Elevation
Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration, and living in Colorado’s dry, high-altitude climate increases that risk. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, confusion, and other serious health concerns.
Tips:
Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Limit caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate the body.
Snack on hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and berries.
2. Enjoy the Outdoors with Gentle Activity
June is part of National Great Outdoors Month, and Teller County has no shortage of scenic spots to explore. Staying active doesn’t mean intense hikes—simple, low-impact movement is beneficial for joint health, mood, and circulation.
Ideas:
Walk with a friend at Woodland Park’s Centennial Trail or around a local lake.
Pack a chair and enjoy the fresh air at Memorial Park.
Join a senior-friendly walking group or fitness class.
3. Protect Yourself from the Sun
The sun is stronger at higher altitudes, meaning seniors are at a greater risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.
Sun Safety Tips:
Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.
Try to stay indoors or in the shade between 10am–2pm.
4. Be Alert for Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Older adults may have a harder time adjusting to heat and regulating body temperature. It’s important to recognize the signs of heat-related illness.
Watch for:
Dizziness or light-headedness
Nausea or muscle cramps
Headache, rapid heartbeat, or confusion
If you notice these symptoms, move to a cooler area, drink water, and seek medical help if needed.
