Nutrition is key to staying healthy as we age. Changes in metabolism, appetite, and health conditions make it essential for older adults to focus on balanced nutrition to maintain energy, support brain function, and prevent chronic disease.
MyPlate for Older Adults was developed to provide food, fluid, and activity guidance specifically for people 50+. It started in 1999 as MyPyramid for Older Adults, evolving into Modified MyPyramid for Older Adults in 2007. By 2011, Tufts University’s Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging introduced MyPlate for Older Adults, following the USDA’s shift from the pyramid model to MyPlate.
In 2015, Tufts HNRCA partnered with AARP Foundation to revamp MyPlate to better address food access issues and demographic needs of older adults.
The updated plate emphasizes:
🍎 Fruits & Vegetables – A variety of colorful produce for vitamins and antioxidants
🌾 Whole Grains – High-fiber options like brown rice, whole wheat bread, and oats
🐟 Lean Proteins – Fish, poultry, beans, nuts, and low-fat dairy for muscle strength
💧 Hydration – Drinking plenty of water, soups, and herbal teas
🏃 Physical Activity – Regular movement for mobility and heart health
Using MyPlate for Older Adults helps seniors make smart dietary choices for long-term wellness. Healthy aging starts with what’s on your plate!
